It’s finally “hip” to give healthy gifts! We are all realizing that health is our greatest gift — so why not support your loved ones’ fitness and wellness endeavors or motivate them to take care of themselves? Here my best ideas (some old, some new) for giving the gift of fitness:
1. Heart Rate Monitors
This is always at the top of my list for gift giving! Heart rate monitors make it easy to determine if you are getting the most out of your workout.
Nothing is more motivating to me than looking down at my monitor after my workout to see I burned 550 calories!!

Think stability balls, resistance bands, hand weights. Pair any one of these with a workout DVD for a great gift! Lightweight, easy-to-store fitness tools like these offer convenient, affordable, portable alternatives to going to the gym or buying a bulky weight set or machine that takes up a lot of space in a room.
Convenience is often one of the greatest keys to sticking with a workout routine. What better place than in your home?
3. Workout Wear
This makes a great gift! There is some great new fitness apparel out there that’s functional yet fashionable and will help motivate that special someone to get out there (even if it is cold and dark) and get moving. I love the new high visibility fleece by Illuminite.com. It looks like a normal fleece during the day but at night it becomes a reflective jacket that will help keep you safe while exercising outdoors. I am also a huge fan of SmartWool socks smartwool.com. They are comfortable, keep you warm and are made especially for being active. And I love the fitness-friendly clothing at lululemon.com. The styles are so flattering and comfortable. I wear this brand all the time.
Everyone should be taking at least 10,000 steps a day — the equivalent of approximately 5 miles. Most people have no idea how many steps they take each day; why not them find out?
5. Gift Certificates for An Exercise Class
Give a gift certificate to a local gym or community center. Many gyms and recreation centers offer certificates starting at increments as small as one month. This is a great way to inspire someone to try out their local fitness options.
6. Childcare Services
This is one of my favorite fitness gift ideas! Do you have a friend or family member who can’t seem to get moving because she has no one to watch her children? Give the gift of your time and offer to watch her kids for an hour or two each week so she can get to the gym.
7. Gift Certificate for Downloading Music
Many people get motivated to move by listening to music. Help someone you care about expand their music library with a gift certificate to their favorite music downloading service. Or make them a mix that keeps a constant beat and keeps their energy up!
