Planning and scheduling time with those you love is obviously crucial to maintaining a healthy and happy relationship. We are all so busy these days that it’s always a good idea to schedule time to reconnect.

If you’re like most people, your dates/special times are based on “calories consumed,” whether that means eating at a new restaurant, getting snacks at a movie, meeting for a fancy coffee or a glass of wine after work. These things can be great ideas for spending time together but once in a while why not try  looking at the opportunity to be with those you love a little differently?

Plan your time with loved ones based on “calories burned.” What I mean is to pick activities to do together that are focused on being active and expending calories.

Don’t think you have the time? Well, you may just have to change your definition of a “date.” You could have “date mornings” where you walk to go get coffee together or “date lunch breaks” where you meet at the gym and grab a healthy snack afterward. My husband and I have three teenagers so most weekday and weekend nights are spent chauffeuring them around or attending sporting activities or supervising groups of kids. Believe me, I know firsthand that sometimes the only time you may have together with a loved one when there are no obligations is at an odd time of the day, but that shouldn’t stop you.

The options are endless for date ideas. You may have to think outside the box a little bit, but here are a few ideas to get you started:

1. Take a hike together

Walking with a loved one is a great way to burn calories together but also a great time to have meaningful conversations. Think of how many times you wished you had your loved one’s captive attention — now’s your chance!

2. Try a new sports class together

Perhaps you’ve been scared to try that kick-boxing or yoga class. Try it out together. (My husband and I do a weekend morning yoga class together.)

3. Walk and talk

If you’re going out to dinner or coffee, pick a local restaurant you can walk to.

4. Challenge each other

Suggest playing your favorite competitive sport with a special someone. A little healthy competition on a tennis court or the golf course can be a lot of fun, and may even spark another kind of physical activity

5. Sign up for a ballroom dancing class together

Romance on the dance floor = calories burned!

6. Volunteer together for a charity that requires physical activity

There are many charities that need physical help, whether it’s Habitat for Humanity where you could help build a house together or The Special Olympics where the two of you could help at a sporting event.

Being active together can truly enhance your relationship. It can foster the support you give to one another and can provide a great time to connect and feel energized together, all while burning calories. Have fun this weekend and start a trend of planning a date night, date morning, or date afternoon with your special someone where calories are burned — not consumed!
