1-Minute Mindfulness Practice

Mindfulness Meditation [1]

The cold winter months are a good time to delve within to decide where you want to invest our energy, what you want to hold onto, and what you want to let go. This is always a very exciting time for me because although every day is a chance for a new beginning, I love the energy around this time of year. Everyone is open to the possibility of change and the boundless opportunity found there. To keep the momentum going, it is important to stay connected to your goals [2], your inspiration, and your belief in yourself.

Over the past five years, I’ve made a huge lifestyle change by working on being more organized, less stressed, and living with intention and mindfulness.

My goal this year is to attend more yoga classes [3]— as a yoga instructor and mother of two, it’s hard to take care of my own practice at times, and yet it’s the most necessary thing I should do in order to sustain myself to help others on their path. With this goal in mind, I found a class right away, made the proper preparations (I thought!), and in the midst of leaving the house, almost gave it all up because my 4-year-old son was having a meltdown; I hadn’t prepared him for the change in routine. Tuning into my breath to calm me and my intention of why I wanted to go to this class, I did persevere and arrived on time, albeit a little frazzled as I laid out my yoga mat.

By the end of the class, I felt more open, relaxed, and ready to face the world, and my son was happy to share his fun experience of playing with new kids and new toys in the childcare center of the fitness facility.

If you find yourself in this kind of situation and need a little extra motivation, consider the following one-minute mindfulness practice to stay focused instead of feeling overwhelmed:

  • Sit comfortably in a quiet area of your house, close your eyes, and tune into the natural rhythm of your breath. Envision yourself taking the necessary steps toward your goal and what you expect your life to be as a result of completion. Sit with this vision, embrace it, and feel all of the sensations flowing through your body until you are ready to open your eyes, knowing that you have all you need within you to move forward with focus, determination, and confidence.

Yoga teaches us to live from a place of truth, called Satya [4] in Sanskrit, and encourages us to guide our lives with trust in our own wisdom. Taking the time to connect to your truth will lead you down the proper path to complete your goals. Just breathe, be gentle, and have fun!
